New guidance moves goal posts for sustainability reporting

Football tournaments, tennis matches and even the Olympics can now monitor and report on their sustainability performance, thanks to new guidance published by the Global Reporting Initiative and an event industry multi-stakeholder Working Group. The events sector is diverse: its activities range from conferences and exhibitions to sports and cultural festivals, all of which have impacts on the economy, environment and society. These impacts need to be considered, measured and shared in order to improve the sustainability performance of the events industry.

Steve Leonard, of Gameplan and the European Sponsorship Association representative on the working group, explained that the importance of sustainability will undoubtedly increase for both events and sponsors: there is an important commercial aspect to sustainability that should not be ignored, an event that is taking its sustainability responsibilities seriously will be more attractive to sponsors.

Sustainability is an integral consideration in planning and delivering the London 2012 Games, says Phil Cumming, Corporate Sustainability Manager at London 2012. We want to set new standards and create a powerful knowledge legacy for more sustainable event management. The GRI Event Organizers Sector Supplement will play a key role in achieving these aims.
